It’s mid-July already! Some recent additions….

It’s been a little too long since my last update.  Although things outside SatinJazz have been keeping me very busy, I’ve still been adding new tracks.  You can find some brief notes on the recent additions below.  As always, I’d enjoy hearing from you whether you have a suggestion, any technical questions, or just to say hello – just send me a shout-out from the station page or simply send me an email directly at the following address:

Love is… The Tender Trap  -  Stacey Kent

Stacey Kent has a unique voice, and you may have already heard the French language tracks I have been playing from her Raconte-Moi… album.  The somewhat more accessible tracks on this recording (at least, perhaps, for the Anglophones among us)  consist mainly of jazz standards such as the Gershwins’ They All Laughed, and Cole Porter’s In the Still of the Night.  This album was Stacey Kent’s second, recorded in 1997.

If you enjoy the Stacey Kent tracks, stay tuned for more music from her albums. I’ll soon be adding tracks from her 2007 album, In Love Again, featuring the music of Richard Rogers (Manhattan, It Might as Well be Spring).

If you like watching YouTubes, have a look at this duet in which Ms Kent sings The Waters of March with 90′s pop/folkstress Suzanne Vega.  It isn’t the best pairing I’ve seen (to put it mildly) as Vega is clearly not as familiar with the song and seems to be outside her comfort zone, but Kent carries the performance very nicely.

 

Deleted Scenes from the Cutting Room Floor - Caro Emerald

Caro Emerald hails from the Netherlands, and this is a more pop and R&B flavoured kind of jazz.  The production gives the tracks a very “retro” sound, which can be overdone at times.  I’m currently playing That Man, Dr Wanna Do, and A Night Like This, but I’ll be substituting other tracks from this album soon, including Back It Up.

 

 

 

Some Other Time – Diane Schuur

I’m loving Diane Schuur’s 2008 album of songs, currently playing Nice Work if You can Get it, Blue Skies, and others.  Expect to hear more from Schuur’s earlier albums soon, such as Friends For Schuur and Schuur Fire.

(And let’s be thankful she’s given up on the “sure” puns.)

 

Shaking Free – Nnenna Freelon

What a force Nnenna Freelon is.  This marvellous singer started recording late in life, but she came out of the blocks sprinting.  This is one of her early albums (1996) although I have already been featuring tracks from her 2005 outing Blueprint of a Lady.

Check out the YouTube of her performance of Straighten Up and Fly Right from the 2001 Grammys telecast with Take 6!  I’ll be featuring tracks from other albums such as Soulcall, Tales of Wonder, and “Live” very soon.

 The Aussies

I’ve been finding more and more albums local Australian artists, many of whom have been signed recently by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, bless their cotton socks. I’ll prepare a separate post about these albums later this week.  In the mean time listen out for Sarah McKenzie, Michelle Nicolle, and Lucinda (Peters).  I hope you keep enjoying the music on SatinJazz.
